Crochet #18: Mermaid
After the mermaid cards that I made recently, I also wanted to crochet a mermaid. I came across a nice free pattern via Pinterest. I decided to crochet this one.
The free mermaid crochet pattern
I came across the blog via Pinterest Blackhatllama you can find the free pattern there. It's not a big project so that appealed to me. Also the stitches used were quite basic :-). That promised to be a nice crochet project.
Yarn used for this crochet project
For this mermaid I have been using cotton yarn again for a long time.
I chose the colors beige, pink, yellow, blue and purple. I still had all this yarn lying around and they are from the Strengels and Action brand. I also used crochet hook size 2.25.
Getting started with the Mermaid
Head and body
Yes, and I knew right away that I started using cotton yarn. It's really not my yarn, plus it was also a small crochet project so it was a fiddly thing. The head went pretty well, but the neck almost killed me ;-)… sorry, very lame pun. Still, I went ahead and finished the body. I found the tail with crocheted double crochet stitches quite difficult, and unfortunately it is not as beautiful as the example.
Edge around body
There was an edge with curves between the fin and the body. At first I thought it would be difficult, but luckily it turned out fine :-).
Yes, I had to continue with fine crochet work again. The arms consist of 6 single crochets in a ring. It worked, but I don't like doing it, it's so small.
I did the hair in a way that was new to me and mentioned in the pattern. Yarn around a book and then tie the hair together with loose hair. Curious? Then take a look at the link to the pattern. This was actually easier than expected.
At the end I put a flower in the hair and made the cheeks pink... maybe a little too pink ;-).
The end result
I am happy with the end result. The pattern is very clear and definitely recommended to make. It was another small crochet project so I am already looking forward to a larger project and I will also leave the cotton yarn aside for a while. I just don't like that kind of yarn.
