Crochet #23: My first scarf, granite stitch
Autumn is coming again, time to crochet my first scarf. I chose to crochet a scarf for my friend. I found a video explaining how to crochet a cool men's scarf. I thought this scarf was ideal for crocheting my first scarf. It is just one type of stitch, the granite stitch
The crochet pattern
On youtube I found an explanation of how to make a scarf with the granite stitch, male scarf with the granite stitch. Because it wasn't completely clear to me yet, I also watched one by Wendy Rademaker video about the granite stitch. And then the penny dropped ;-).
What did I use for my first crochet scarf
For my scarf I bought 4 balls of yarn Royal from Zeeman (100 gr - 241 m) in the color Army green. I ended up using 2 whole balls for a scarf with a length of 1.5 meters and 47 strands wide. I cast on the chain with crochet hook size 5.5, I did the next rows with crochet hook size 5.
The first tours
I did the first rounds step by step as in the first YouTube video. I just made my scarf a little wider. I started with 47 chains.
After one evening of crocheting I only have a small piece of scarf left... that turns out to be more work than expected. Fortunately, it is nice and relaxing and the most important thing is that it is not winter yet ;-).
After many hours of crocheting
After two evenings I had already crocheted a whole piece. I just found out that I hadn't crocheted every last single crochet of every row the same... and that was clearly stated in the video. But it was not immediately clear to me where exactly I should enter. As a result, I think the scarf is not completely straight but a bit wavy at the bottom and top. I now consciously do the same insertion of the last rows.
I didn't choose to take it out because I was already quite far along and I thought the rest of the scarf was fine. You can't see it when you wear the scarf. And a first scarf doesn't have to be perfect, right :-)? Practice makes perfect.
After all this I got the hang of it and fortunately the scarf straightened very neatly. Because I thought I had come a long way, I grabbed another scarf and measured how much I still had to do... oh no, I was only half way... this is going to take a long time.
The end result
After many hours of crocheting, my friend was completely satisfied. Ultimately the scarf is one color green, which is what my friend wanted. The length is 1.5 meters. He thought this was the perfect size :-).
Crocheting the granite stitch was fun to do. I thought the resulting pattern was very beautiful and sleek. Certainly suitable for a men's scarf. I crocheted the pattern quite neatly, unfortunately I made some mistakes with the last stitch at the beginning, but hey, it's my first scarf and when you wear it you can't see anything. After this scarf I will definitely crochet another scarf, this time for myself :-).
