Review: Action book Handlettering Decotime
On the Action's fan page on Facebook I saw a message that they also sold a handlettering book at Action. A book full of pages to learn to handletter. I went to the store to have a look the same day, but unfortunately it was completely sold out :-(. I went to Action several times and last week I finally found a copy. Of course I got to work right away. In this article a review of the hand lettering book from Decotime. Was it worth the wait?
The Action hand lettering book
The hand lettering book from Decotime costs € 2 (you also have a variant to learn how to illustrate). Not much money if you consider that the book has a hard cover and contains 100 pages. I find the book and the pages appealingly designed. The book contains various chapters with information, tips and assignments.
The book has a logical sequence if you want to start hand lettering. You really start with the basics. So you can make the book page by page, but you don't have to. I chose to create pages that really appealed to me. I have already practiced with it several times handlettering.
Getting started with hand lettering
Because I am normally a perfectionist, this time I just wanted to get started. If it fails, it fails. So I immediately started with a black fineliner. So don't erase anything ;-). Below are some examples of assignments that I have already completed.
Of course I not only wanted to practice with individual letters, borders and frames, but also hand lettering an entire page. I have chosen to shape the sentence “Home is where WI-FI connects automatically” differently. I did use a pencil and eraser for this. First I made a rough sketch and then traced it with the fineliner. What do you think about it?
My experience with the hand lettering book
The book contains nice general explanations, tips and various assignments. There are also many examples in the book. The assignments I completed were fun and educational to do. I enjoyed making these pages and will definitely make more. The fineliners I used did not bleed through the paper. What I always find very important is that you can do all the assignments.
If you want to start hand lettering, this book is certainly a nice stepping stone. I can also recommend this book for advanced hand letterers. Especially for the price of €2. It is also very suitable to take with you on holiday, a kind of activity book for adults. If you want to learn more about hand lettering, I recommend the book: “This is how you do hand lettering!” from Paperfuel is also highly recommended by the way!
Is this book about hand lettering something for you? Do you know another nice book?
